- Sometime in January I purchased a new CD-ROM cutter and a version
- of Macromedia Director 4.0. I'm planning to put together a
- multi-media CD and planned to use Director as my tool for doing so.
-
- Well as it turns out, last night I discovered that Macromedia
- is releasing Director 5.0. I contacted their customer support
- to see about an upgrade. I was told that it will cost me
- $399 for that upgrade even though I just purchased the product
- and am at this point still only reading documentation to
- try to understand how it works.
-
- To say that I consider this to be a rip off is an understatement!
- This version of Director is costing me something like $1200 after
- the upgrade. That's outrageous!
-
- As a general rule most companies will extend a 90 day grace
- period during which they will send free upgrades to new
- purchasers of their product. Some companies will go six
- months. I was told that Macromedia only has a 30 day free upgrade
- period. In this case it begins sometime in Febuary. So those who
- bought Director just a few weeks ago are stuck for another
- healthy chunk of change.
-
- Customer support? Huh, that's a joke. I discussed this with
- representatives of Macromedia and they've given new meaning to
- the word "inflexible." Looks to me like Macromedia is just another
- big company that's just out to gouge their user base for every
- penny they can.
-
- My suggestion for prospective Director buyers is to think twice
- and make sure you know what your doing before you plop your money down.
- If I'd known then what I know now I would have thought long and hard
- about making such a purchase.
